The weather app is your bff
Is it going to rain? How much rain did we get!? Never in my life did I think when I was 26 years old I would be checking the weather app at least 5 times a day or that the weather would literally be one of the most talked about things in our marriage. When it does rain, you better believe it’s a celebration!
Let’s check the calves/sprinkler on the way to town
This sounds like a quick drive by and look kind of thing right? Nope. If it takes less than an hour it’s a lucky day! I’m not going to lie, some of our biggest fights have been over this, haha. It never fails when I’m starving and we are on our way to town to grab a bite to eat, the sprinkler needs to be reversed. I think after 6 years I’m finally catching on now ;) Snacks are now in my purse at ALL times haha.
Never on time
”It’s just part of it”. This has been the hardest adjustment going from city life to country. Calves are out, fence is down, sprinkler is stuck, rain is coming and the field has to be plowed, the moisture is just right for baling… something ALWAYS comes up. Especially when you’re trying to leave town, haha.
Your vehicle will NEVER be clean
Between trips down dirt roads, to and from fields, and hauling anything from food to parts or clothes, there’s a good chance your vehicle spends the majority of the year a mess. My friends just don’t get it. When we are on the go most of the day, we have to keep the car stocked with everything we need! It gets 10x worse when you have babies. Need a bottle of water? Need a change of clothes? Need 6 notebooks? Need some 3 day old french fries? I got you.
You have to say no
This one is hard. We miss out on a lot. Sometimes we have to miss out on events, weddings, family gatherings, etc. It’s hard having to say no to friends and family.
It can be lonely
It’s easy to get jealous of the “normal” families that can go to brunch on Saturday mornings. Most families get Saturdays and Sundays off, but not us. We always look forward to the slower months, because the hours are so much shorter, but there are never days off. Weekends don’t look like the typical families weekends, for us it’s just another work day.
It’s beautiful
You learn pretty quickly to see the blessings in your life. The joys of a picnic in the car as a family, seeing your babies eyes light up when they see the tractor, to fully relying on God and each other through every season. It truly is a beautiful life. It’s not meant for every family, but it’s meant for ours. I couldn’t imagine a different life. Through the struggles, joys, fun and sorrows of farming, I look forward to our future together.
